In this activity, students will explore a drawing technique called ‘reverse drawing’. They will be illustrating space scenes by applying light colours on black paper. Practicing reverse drawing technique improves students’ painting skills. It takes some getting use too, but when the technique is applied well, it can produce some remarkable results.
Learn about space
Illustrate space scenes by applying light colours on black paper
Practice various rendering techniques using pencil crayons and gouache paint
About color paper:
Have you ever been to space? Would you like to go to space some day?
What do you think being in space is like?
Would you like to be an astronaut?
Can you name the planets in our solar system?
What are some objects that you can find in outer space? e.g. comets, meteors, rockets, satellites, trash, etc.
Are there any interesting facts that you know about space?
Planets of our Solar System: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
Space Objects: satellite, meteor, comet, shooting star, milky way, black hole, galaxy, astronaut, rocket, the sun, aliens, UFOs, garbage

Photo Reference. Select a space photograph that you want to use as reference.
White Pencil. First draw the planets, stars, comets and other space elements onto black paper using a white pencil crayon. Use a circle template to draw the planets.
Highlights. Shade highlights in your drawing. Have a test sheet of black paper handy to practice on.
Color Pencil. After drawing everything in white, add colors with color pencils.
Gouache Paint. After you’ve done all you can with the colored pencils, start applying gouache paint to your drawing.
Opaque White. For the finishing touches, use opaque white paint to convey the brightest highlights, such as stars. Use it sparingly on the most brightest parts of the drawing.
Make Another From Your Imagination. Once you have completed your space drawing, make another space scene, this time from your imagination.
*Younger students may use wax crayons, silver and gold markers to make their space scenes.
