In the second part of the lesson, students will learn the process of sculpting characters. The creative approach used by animation studios will be introduced to help students develop their character designs, which can be used in various forms of media such as animated cartoons, movies, video games, comic books, and advertisements.
Understand and apply the creative process used by animation studios to develop and design characters.
Sculpt characters using various sculpting techniques.
Although most of us don’t give it a second thought, the characters we see on animated cartoons, movies, video games and comic books took many hours to develop.
Today, most 3D modeling is often accomplished on the computer, however hand sculpted designs are still used in many productions.
Materials Needed:
Sketchbook, pencil and eraser
Markers and color pencils
Colored clay
Styrofoam balls
Sculpting tools
This is a character design from my student, Joseph. Professional productions often require the front, back and side profile drawings, since the character will be seen from various angles.
In this phase, we will bring our character to life by sculpting a 3D model, referencing our character design drawing.
Prepare the Clay: Gather the clay colors you need for your character, and feel free to mix clay to achieve specific colors.
Head: Begin by sculpting the head. Use a styrofoam ball as a base and cover it with clay for sturdiness. Shape and smooth the head with your hands.
Torso: Next, sculpt the torso. Utilize styrofoam balls as a base and shape them with your hands to create a smooth form.
Limbs: Divide the clay into even balls to ensure correct proportions for the arms, hands, legs, and feet. Sculpt each limb by rolling and shaping with your fingers.
Details: Add intricate details like eyes, nose, mouth, and fingers to each part using various sculpting tools. *Remember to add details after completing the basic structure to avoid damage.
Attach the Appendages: Use a 'ball-ended' sculpting tool to create sockets in the torso for attaching the head and limbs. Then, carefully attach all the appendages to the torso.
Sculpt Another Character: If time permits, you can sculpt a second character for your first character to interact with, expanding your creative world
