In this lesson, students will create Flag-Themed CD Glass Deco art by transforming unwanted CDs into meaningful double-sided decorations. One side will feature a national flag of their choice, while the other side will depict cultural symbols, landscapes, foods, or icons representing that nation. This project encourages artistic expression, cultural appreciation, and sustainable crafting. When finished, the CDs can be hung as decorative ornaments.
Identify and recreate the design of a national flag.
Research and illustrate elements that represent a country's culture or identity.
Apply design thinking to merge national and cultural symbolism in a circular format.
Repurpose common waste materials in a creative, meaningful way.

Circles are ubiquitous in design and nature. They symbolize wholeness and completion. In graphic design, circles often convey harmony and unity, making them visually appealing in logos, symbols, and diagrams.
What flag would you like to represent, and why?
What symbols, foods, animals, or landmarks are unique to that country?
How can you simplify those elements to fit within a small circular format?
How can the center hole of the CD become a feature (e.g., sun, moon, eye, plate)?
How can the two sides be connected in theme and color?
Flags visually represent identity, values, and history. On the flip side of a flag lies the heart of a country—its people, foods, nature, traditions, and icons. In this project, we explore both:
The front side will depict a national flag.
The back side will express visual elements that symbolize that country’s soul.
Examples:
Japan: Front – red sun on white; Back – cherry blossoms, Mt. Fuji, sushi
Italy: Front – green/white/red stripes; Back – pizza, Leaning Tower of Pisa
Brazil: Front – green, yellow diamond, blue globe; Back – rainforest, carnival masks
South Korea: Front – Taegukgi; Back – hanbok, kimchi, traditional patterns
USA: Front – stars and stripes; Back – Statue of Liberty, eagle, jazz instruments
Choose a Country
Pick a country that you admire, identify with, or are curious about.
Research the flag and important cultural elements (symbols, foods, festivals, landmarks, etc.).
Sketch Your Two Sides
On your sketchbook, trace the outline of a CD twice.
Side A (Front): Draw the country’s national flag.
Side B (Back): Design symbols that represent the country’s culture.
Make sure both are bold and adaptable to a circular format.
Transfer to CD
Use a permanent marker to carefully draw your flag on one side of the CD and your cultural design on the other side.
Outline the Designs
Use black Glass Deco Art Pens to make the outlines bold and clear.
Add Color
Fill both sides with vibrant colors using Glass Deco Art Pens. Consider color harmony between both sides.
Dry and Assemble
Let the designs dry fully. You may glue two CDs back-to-back if you want to display two different countries.
Otherwise, decorate front and back of the same CD.
Add String
Tie a string through the CD’s center hole and hang your finished work.
Circular Design: A design element arranged around a central point.
Graphic Design: The art of combining text and visuals to communicate messages.
Permanent Marker: A type of marker designed to write on various surfaces without smudging.
Theme: A central idea or motif used in artistic works.
